Coach's Tip: Use the Hook Grip
Coach Rob ALWAYS uses chalk and the hook grip…even while driving.Coach Rob on the Hook Grip
When performing Olympic lifts (clean, snatch, etc) be sure to always use the “hook grip”. To hook grip your barbell, initiate by wrapping your thumb around the bar, followed by the rest of your fingers securely holding your thumb and the barbell. This grip not only is considered a necessity in the weight lifting world, but also allows you to lift more weight than you would be able to without using it. At first, the grip may feel uncomfortable, but with time your hands will adapt and you won’t even remember how you used to lift weights without it.
Side note: In conjunction with the hook grip, chalk is also important in helping you grip the barbell. Remember, a little chalk goes a long way, and please keep it in the bucket! :)
